Fashion as Art

Fashion as Art

Tonight, on the first Monday of May, the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art belong to fashion. This has been tradition since the first Met Gala in 1948, but this year represents a meaningful change:, something has shifted: quietly and permanently, in the way that the most meaningful changes tend to arrive. the Costume Institute has moved upstairs, and fashion now permanently occupies the heart of one of the world's most prestigious museums. Limestone thresholds. Venetian plaster walls. A declaration, without equivocation, that fashion has earned its place among the permanent exhibits.

What the Met understands is that fashion is not frivolous. It is perhaps the most intimate art form we have; it lives against the body, moves when we move, holds in its seams and silhouettes the particular concerns of the moment in which it was made.

Edit New York sits mere blocks from the museum. While the world watches the steps, we find ourselves thinking about what is inside: about what it means to be a culture that finally, formally, places the dressed body in the same rooms as the antiquities. This is the sensibility that guides how we curate, always considering the craftsmanship within the garment and how it makes the wearer feel.

When we say fashion is art, this is not meant metaphorically, but literally.

Heirlome builds every collection around the intersection of history and craft, for Spring 2026, collaborating with Purépecha master artisans to translate centuries-old floral and bird motif traditions onto fine silk, linen, and handworked crochet. ASHLYN melds Japanese pattern-making with Western draping into silhouettes that are at once architectural and effortlessly feminine. This work was recognized by the Met itself in 2021, when her Quinn gown entered the In America: A Lexicon of Fashion exhibition.

Curation is an act of belief: that beauty made with care is worth preserving. On the first Monday of May, that belief feels less like conviction and more like inevitability.
